Effect of tripanosomicide benznidazole (Rochagan®) on the biodistribution of sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) in Wistar rats BABT
Barbosa,Vanessa Santos de Arruda; Holanda,Maria de Carvalho Xavier; Silva,Roseane Pereira da; Oliveira,Daniel Pereira de; Silva Júnior,Maurício Ferreira da; Oliveira,Elias Herculano de; Spyrides,Maria Helena Constantino; Medeiros,Aldo Cunha.
Benznidazole, a drug with specific anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity, is used in the treatment of Chagas' disease. The radiopharmaceutical sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) is used to obtain diagnostic images of the stomach, thyroid, parathyroids, salivary glands, brain and in the study of esophageal reflux and blood flow. This study aimed at evaluating in vivo the influence of benznidazole treatment on the sodium pertechnetate biodistribution in Wistar rats. The percentage of radioactivity per gram (%ATI/g) of various organs (brain, heart, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, liver, muscle and blood) was determined. Comparing the treated rats with the controls, we observed that sodium pertechnetate biodistribution did not change when...

Inorganic nanoparticles kill Toxoplasma gondii via changes in redox status and mitochondrial membrane potential OAK
Adeyemi, Oluyomi Stephen; Murata, Yuho; Sugi, Tatsuki; Kato, Kentaro.
This study evaluated the anti-Toxoplasma gondii potential of gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles (NPs). Inorganic NPs (0.01-1,000 mu g/mL) were screened for antiparasitic activity. The NPs caused >90% inhibition of T. gondii growth with EC50 values of <= 7, <= 1, and <= 100 mu g/mL for gold, silver, and platinum NPs, respectively. The NPs showed no host cell cytotoxicity at the effective anti-T. gondii concentrations; the estimated selectivity index revealed a >= 20-fold activity toward the parasite versus the host cell. The anti-T. gondii activity of the NPs, which may be linked to redox signaling, affected the parasite mitochondrial membrane potential and parasite invasion, replication, recovery, and infectivity potential. Our results...
